Cognitive Defusion Drill
The Cognitive Defusion Drill is designed to strengthen psychological flexibility by helping singers recognize thoughts as mental events rather than objective truths. Instead of becoming caught up in self-critical or anxious thinking, singers practice noticing thoughts, briefly labeling them, and gently returning their attention to the present task.
What is cognitive defusion?
Cognitive defusion is an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) technique that assists in separating oneself from one’s thoughts, rather than treating them as absolute truths. This helps to create psychological flexibility by establishing distance from unhelpful thoughts.
Why it matters for singers
Singers frequently experience unhelpful thoughts and beliefs regarding their own singing, during and outside of practice and performance. Cognitive defusion helps singers to recognize that thoughts are a normal part of the human experience, and to create enough distance from them to respond with greater presence, flexibility, and neutrality, rather than automatically accepting them as truth.
How to do the drill
Begin singing.
Notice when a distracting or evaluative thought arises.
Mentally label the thought. Note: when first learning the drill in practice, it's okay to briefly pause if the thought is particularly sticky. The pause isn't to analyze the thought, rather to notice and label it before returning to singing. As the skill develops, this pause becomes unnecessary.
Continue singing.
Repeat whenever new thoughts arise.
Sample Cognitive Defusion Labels
Note: These labels can begin as more fully fleshed thoughts, for example “I’m going to crack on that note”, “I missed an entrance three bars ago and now I can’t get my footing”, “Everyone thinks I’m doing a bad job”. As you proceed with the exercise, try to condense your analysis of the thoughts to single words or short phrases, similar to those below.
Worrying
Judging
Remembering
Catastrophizing
Planning
